Nelson Parade, Hunters Hill Remediation

About the Nelson Parade Remediation

In 2009 the State Property Authority acquired property at numbers 7 and 9 Nelson Parade, Hunters Hill, from NSW Health. NSW Health had previously purchased the sites after testing found radioactive readings in the residues that posed an element of risk to public health. These properties are contaminated by residues from a uranium processing plant which operated on the site from 1911-1916. The plant was run by the Radium Hill Company, a commercial enterprise that no longer exists. In 2009, the Authority also acquired number 11 Nelson Parade from NSW Health.

The Government requested the Authority to undertake remediation on 7, 9 and 11 Nelson Parade and manage future sale of the sites. The Authority is working closely with the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW), NSW Department of Health, NSW Department of Planning and NSW Maritime to plan and manage the remediation.

An experienced specialist contractor will carry out the remediation works. Remediation is scheduled to begin mid 2010, pending Environmental Assessment (EA) and Remediation Action Plan (RAP) approval.

A RAP and EA will be developed in consultation with expert consultants, a remediation contractor and Site Auditor. The RAP will need the Site Auditor’s endorsement before lodgement with DECCW. The RAP will form one component of the EA which will be exhibited for public comment as part of the planning assessment process.
